Spellz: An Educational Game To Improve Spelling and Proof Reading

ReType is a Microsoft word plugin tool designed to help students improve their spelling, grammar and proofreading skills with special technology incorporating the user's eye gaze to navigate the screen. The purpose of this was to reduce the use of a mouse and increase the user's productivity. This tool consists of a score to track the number of corrections, the ability to combo as a different way to improve one's score, a hint button to provide help on-demand, and punishment to lower the score if spellings are incorrect. From the surface, ReType may seem very capable of achieving the purpose of helping users improve their spelling already. However, further development of ReType is restricted and complicated with the interface that is Microsoft Word. At the consumer end, access to ReType may be hindered due to Microsoft Word not being readily accessible for everyone due to the high cost of purchasing the software. Furthermore, whilst eye-tracking hardware is convenient, not all users may have this impending use of ReType. Microsoft Word has performance issues, reliance on the difficult to work with API, and stability issues using MongoDB and other databases. Therefore a standalone web browser game using only Vanilla Javascript is a far better alternative, in both simplicity and stability.
