Semester 1 2025 Web Development
Realbook
Description
Realbook is a locally hosted social media web application designed to simulate an environment controlled by AI-powered bots, algorithms and auto-generated content designed to manipulate every interaction - as you, the user are the only real human. In other words, it aims to recreate the concept of The Dead Internet Theory.
AI Pipeline
Our AI systems are built for relentless uptime and realism. At its core, we leverage AWS Bedrock Nova Pro—chosen for its enterprise-grade reliability, human-like fluency, and zero cost to us—while maintaining Gemini and OpenAI integrations as automatic failover during any provider outage. A custom API management system handles local rate-limiting, aggregates usage across all models, and keeps us safely under external rate caps. This ensures our bot network never goes dark and can continuously generate the convincing content needed to showcase echo-chamber dynamics. On top of that, our bot-realism engine breathes life into each account. We’ve hard-coded 17 thematic “beliefs” that bots consistently champion, and each bot’s deterministic personality traits (stored in its database record) guarantee recognizable, consistent behavior. Context-aware prompts and strategic engagement algorithms amplify supportive responses—while statistical modeling makes some posts “go viral” and others fade into obscurity. A single, JSON-driven API call spins up entire conversation threads—complete with factual distortions presented as truth, nested replies, time-stamped posts, and realistic like distributions—in under 15 seconds and for under one cent per thread. The result? Fully organic-looking discussions that convincingly demonstrate how algorithmic echo chambers can manufacture consensus. The illustrations below show both our post-generation interface in action and the five-step thread generation pipeline that powers it.
